Different study options

US institutions offer a variety of study options for students of all academic levels, each with its own unique benefits, enabling students to choose academic and professional courses of their choice.

  • Public and private colleges and universities in the US offer all ESL, UG, and PG options for international students.

Post-study options

  • American institutions offer Optional Practical Training (OPT) that allows students to work for 12 months during or after their studies.
  • OPT is available after each degree program
  • Students can participate in Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) after completing each degree-seeking level such as Associate, Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate.
  • OPT is valid for a full calendar year (12 months). Graduates of STEM programs are qualified for a 2-year extension of OPT that allows them to continue working for up to 3 years following each degree level.
  • Students are not eligible for OPT with Non-degree programs (ESL).
  • While staying in the US on an F-1 visa, it is possible to transfer to other universities and degree levels.

Intakes and general admissions process

Intakes

US universities usually have three intakes, fall, spring, and summer.

  • While most institutes have spring intakes. 
  • some institutes have other intake options including summer.

General admissions processes

Although the required documents for applying for admission may vary by university policy, all US institutions will generally require the following documents during the application process. Preparing them in advance will speed up the application review process:

  • Copy of passport 
  • Academic record (transcripts will be required prior to enrolment) 
  • Proof of English language proficiency. 

Some universities may require: 

  • Statement of purpose
  • Letters of recommendation or referees
  • Transcript evaluations

Tuition fees & payments

  • Tuition fees will vary by academic level and university.
  • Many colleges and universities require prepayment of tuition and fees.
  • While others may offer payment plans.

Proof of finances required for I-20 

  • Students must show their financial documentation, often in the form of bank statements and an Affidavit of Support, before receiving their I-20 for immigration purposes.
  • The student’s estimated cost of living and educational expenses is listed on the I-20, such as tuition, fees, housing, and personal expenses.
  • This is only an estimated amount; the exact sum will frequently be slightly different from the amount on the I-20.
  • The purpose of these assessments is to prove to the US government that the student has sufficient funds to live and study in the US without having to work to support themselves.

Basic visa requirements and processes

  • Different visa types
    • There are different types of visas in the United States, but the most common type of visa for students is the F-1 student visa.
  • Process for obtaining an F-1 visa
    • Step 1: Apply and be unconditionally accepted into the university of your choice.
    • Step 2: Submit financial support documents.
    • Step 3: Receive Form I-20.
    • Step 4: Pay the I-901 (SEVIS fee) to your university.
    • Step 5: Complete the DS-160 to schedule your visa interview.
      • Be sure to print the confirmation page with the barcode and bring it to the visa interview along with all supporting documents.
    • Step 6: Interview for a visa at an American embassy or consulate abroad
    • Step 7: Entire the United States on F-1 status (up to 30 days prior to the Program Start Date listed on the student’s I-20).
